About EDP and SITEA

The Society for International Trade and Economic Affairs (SITEA) has held the Elite Development Programme (EDP) in Taiwan since summer 2000. EDP provides a forum for under- and post-graduate students to discuss the hottest issues of the year. Past themes include Information Technology (EDP 2000), Knowledge Economy (EDP 2001) and Grand View for Citizen in Global Community on Health Concerns, Human Rights, Environmental Protection, Economy and Trade (EDP 2002). Not only is EDP the first English-language academic programme of its kind in Taiwan, but also it is unique in its one-week format, which includes a Simulated International Summit.

About EDP2003

We are living in an era of "Uncertainty", while the fierce competitiveness among nations is realistic. As the theme of EDP2003 suggests, this year EDP will take a closer look at the meaning of multifaceted national competitiveness. A nation's competitiveness encompasses not only its financial capabilities, but also its ability to provide a suitable environment for investment, human lifestyle and future development.

Can regional cooperation in the Far East improve national competitiveness? Our simulated international summit, entitled Upgrading East Asian Competitiveness, will explore this question in some depth. Dividing into simulated country delegations, we will investigate the competitiveness of East Asian countries (Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Chinese Taipei, P.R.C., Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia), in the process uncovering possibilities for regional cooperation.

What we offer

1.

Lectures will be offered on topics related to national competitiveness and international affairs by some of Taiwan's foremost authorities, including figures from academia and the Ministry of Economics. Over 70% of the lectures will be delivered in English. English handouts will be provided for all Chinese-language lectures.

2.

The Simulated International Summit will be carried out by eight country delegations and three subordinate working groups.

3.

Every year, the EDP Forum focuses on a different controversial topic.

4.

The Institute Visiting will consist of visits to representative institutes and other organizations associated with participating East Asian countries.

5.

The social programme will include a Ballroom Dance Class and an International Banquet.

6.

Friendship is an underlying goal in all EDP events!!!!
